Approval for shop proposals is given

West Bromwich’s run down Queen’s Square shopping centre is to be demolished to make way for a modern development of shops, restaurants and homes.

The move was approved by Sandwell Council’s planning committee last night.

The plans put forward by developers Halladale Anglo was passed by the committee subject to conditions, including better provision for disabled shoppers.

The development will include almost 40,000 square metres of shopping area, 24 flats, offices, bars and cafes. There will also be a seven-storey car park off Bull Street to cater for extra visitor numbers.

Council leader Bill Thomas welcomed the decision of the committee saying the development would be a catalyst for regeneration in the town.

He said "This is a major step forward for Sandwell. At last we are seeing theory turned into process. Now we will see West Bromwich turned into one of the major shopping centres in the West Midlands."
